I forgot to mention that Tuesday was the birthday of Charles Darwin. You still have a little time left to celebrate Darwin Days. Tuesday was also Lincoln's birthday. Two of the very greatest figures of the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln, were born on exactly the same day: February 12, 1809.

That concluding fact boggles my mind - it's even stranger and more wonderful than Jefferson and Adams sharing a death date (and what a death date). I mean, Lincoln, the man who forged the America we know (with the emphasis on the "united," as versus the "states") AND Darwin, who defines modern science - as well as religion? Amazing.

Looking forward, how about a challenge to read some selections of Lincoln and Darwin over the next year, culminating with their 200th birthdays next February?
