New Publication: "Caesar vs. Pirates"

When Julius Caesar was a young man, before he became the most powerful man in Rome, he was kidnapped by pirates in the eastern Mediterranean. My new story in the online true adventure magazine Truly Adventurous tells the story of how Caesar was kidnapped, how he escaped, and how he got his revenge. You can read the exciting true story here: https://medium.com/truly-adventurous/caesar-vs-pirates-3d673f3b8749

You can also listen to the story read on Audm. Or listen here on Soundcloud.

This narrative is the only fictional account of which I’m aware that very smoothly and credibly weaves together all the major historical sources—Plutarch, Suetonius, Paterculus, and Polyaenus. This story also introduces the broader context of Caesar’s early life, the politics of late republican Rome, the issue of piracy, Roman military tactics and other relevant background. In addition, you have dug into the sources to identify often-overlooked details that provide dramatic value—such as your exploring Caesar’s relationship to Epicrates (who, in Polyaenus’s telling is a mere “Milesian servant”). And the story is also a thoroughly engrossing read!
