Not Fade Away

Today is the 50th anniversary of "The Day the Music Died." On February 3, 1959, a plan crashed near Clear Lake, Iowa, taking the lives of the pilot and the three musicians on board: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper. Have you been to the Surf Ballroom, where they played their last show on 2/2/1959? It's amazing. Feels like 1959.

On the way home one Sunday evening (we had dropped our youngest son off at college), we stopped in Clear Lake, IA for dinner. The mayor was eating at the next table and, being the mayor, he introduced himself and talked up his little town. He encouraged us to come back and visit the Surf. We just might.

NB: There is nothing resembling surf in Clear Lake.
